I don't consider speed to be pointless. My time is valuable. I don't want to have to wait around for inefficient code. I think you will find my opinions about speed to be consistant with the users (as opposed to programmers) out there in the world. It has been show, on mainframes anyways, that users will find response time of 3 seconds or less acceptable, with subsecond being the optimum. Anything over 3 seconds is intolerable to the average user.
