You can do better than that.  DESKTOP windows use a mask to display
files, so you can edit DESKTOP.INF to display only files fitting that
mask.  It's not perfect, but open two windows and use one with mask
*.PRG and the other with mask *.T?? to get applications.  However, each
directory needs its own windows.
