I recall reading this too; I think BYTE did an article on the SE explaining
all this back in '87 - unfortunately my old issues don't go back that far.

I did dig around a dusty pile of old stuff, though and found an Apple
Brochure on the SE which states:

Also found the Spring 1987 issue of "Wheels for the Mind" (remember that?)
which has a "Questions and Answers" section on the SE:
