Novice: Doesn't understand why LaTeX won't allow him to use square brackets in
an array environment, like

\begin{eqnarray*}
([a] ++ x )^{\sim} & = & (x^{\sim}) ++ [a] \\
[]^{\sim} & = & []
\end{eqnarray*}
