When the machine is first booted the beep sounds just fine. When I start X, however, the beep turns into a very lame sounding click or thump with the occasional real beep thrown in. After the first time X is started after a reboot I lose the beep completely when I'm out of X using hft mode. The X server beep option doesn't help.
