Thanks to the people who sent me responses to my recent query.

One of you [sorry I lost the original message or I would have
sent this by e-mail]  suggested that I try to use 

XtCallCallbacks( status_label, XmNexposeCallback, (XtPointer) &da_struct );

(after setting up the XmDrawingAreaCallbackStruct called da_struct).
I tried this and it appears to be making my label update (I don't get
long intervals with a blank status).  BUT, I get the message "Warning:
Cannot find callback list in XtCallCallbacks" I find it strange that
it appears to be working when it is producing a warning message.

Any help to get rid of this message will be greatly appreciated.
