Grant,  I can think of at least two.  First you can easily move it from computer
to computer, should you need too and secondly, you avoid interrupt conflicts
that occur with some equipment.  There are of course disadvantages too, cost,
tying up a serial or parallel port and some are sluggish, but different strokes
for different folks.
