the mode that has a name closely resembling "auto-reliable"; if you select 
"error-free", your modem may refuse to connect with other modems!

   That sounds like a port speed problem.

   In order to achieve highest possible performance, you can tell your modem 
that it shall communicate with your PC at a fixed speed (usually 9600 bps for 
2400MNP modems) regardless of the connect speed.  In its "Modem and Dialing" 
menu (ALT-O, M), Telix gives you the option of matching the reported connect 
speed or not (option M).

   You may chose not to lock your communication speed (I suggest that you do) 
but, either way, your modem's configuration and Telix' must be the same, or 
one will switch speeds when the other doesn't, resulting in garbage on your 
screen, even in a good connect.
