   Thanks to all who replied to my question.  I have managed to
install emacs-18.57 and it run well except for one problem.  No matter
where I start it from it seems to think the current working directory
is the home directory.  I have checked the PWD environment variable
and it is set correctly.  Has anyone seen this ?
