Possibly in the U.S., but in the U.K. Software Engineers may apply for
Chartered Engineer (CEng) status after qualifying for full professional
membership (i.e. Member or Fellow) of our professional body, the British
Computer Society (BCS).

If this doesn't confirm our discipline as an engineering rather than "artistic"
one, I don't know what will.
