I don't have the problem you're describing at all. My flat maps are A-OK. But I have problems that others apparently don't and others are having problems that probably you nor I have. It's almost like we all are working with different versions of the software. This gives a different meaning to the word "unstable". Personally I find Imagine VERY unpredicable. The only thing I can suggest re: flat mapping , is to make sure your brush axis is not flush with the surface of the flat object. This will often give that "digital bounce" I'm sure you've heard of before.
