    I was wondering if there is a program which would allow posting of messages
    to an X display.  The idea is to be able to display "message for the day" 
    notices on X terminals.  I recall reading about Xmessage in FAQ.  Would
    this do the job?  If so where can it be found.

Perhaps this is too obvious, but did you look in
contrib/clients/xmessage on the R4 distribution?
