   The Ven-Tel Pathfinder is a Telebit Trailblazer, which speaks only PEP 
protocol, not HST or V.32.  You will not be able to connect those two modems 
at speeds above 2400 bps.  Use X7 (to disable voice connect detection), 
S9=12, S10=14.

   There are hundreds, if not thousands, of such programs; generally speaking, 
they are written by people who don't really know what they're doing.  You 
certainly have no idea what the author's modem skill level is; he might not 
know any better than you!
