Actually, the 5ESS is still written in C. They tried to migrate to C++, but ran into all sorts of problems (paradigm shift, tool maturity, infrastructure, etc). [Not that this is a phenomenon limited to C++: I can think of some Ada failures too...especially early in Ada's history.]
