After all, these guys were working for the commies. You could have some exciting scenes where the KGB finds out what is going on, and sends a hit squad to take care of the problem. Of course, the FBI doesn't believe that Uzzi-toting mercenaries are out to get some mild-mannered astronomer, so Arnold, er, Cliff, has to take out all of the bad guys himself. Plenty of opportunities for chase scenes and special effects, maybe luring the last guy into a particle accelerator and disintegrating him in slow motion! (Many :-), but I have never liked a movie made from a book that I liked.)
