The typeface used in Scientific American is Lucida, designed by Charles Bigelow, of Bigelow & Holmes. It was not designed specifically for Scientific American, but was designed to scale well when rendered on bitmapped devices like screens and laser printers. Particular attention was paid to the way strokes and bowls came together, to avoid ink (toner?) traps at various point sizes. I think Lucida looks quite good in Scientific American, and is a clean, readable face. -- Chuck Musciano ARPA : chuck@trantor.harris-atd.com Harris Corporation Usenet: ...!uunet!x102a!trantor!chuck PO Box 37, MS 3A/1912 AT&T : (407) 727-6131 Melbourne, FL 32902 FAX : (407) 729-3363 A good newspaper is never good enough, but a lousy newspaper is a joy forever. -- Garrison Keillor
