I believe that if you CD to the appropriate directory before starting the
program, that works as well.  I don't see the bit deal.  I assign about twenty
or thirty directories in my startup and it doesn't seem to hurt things.

But my GF used to start her Ncomm by CDing to that directory then starting the
program, and it seemed to work OK for her without an assign.
