Now do you see why hitting shift-8 >for * is so much easier? No, and I'm a touch-typist too. :-) Hold down the right SHIFT key with your little finger. Press the '#' key, and then STILL HOLDING THE SHIFT KEY tap the '?' with your fourth finger. Lightning fast. (And I'm a long-time UNIX '*' person too.)
