Lines: 34 On my trusty EISA 486 box running X windows under Unix I have a brand X 1024x768x8 Tseng ET4000 super-VGA driving a 14" NEC Multisync Plus monitor. It works fine, the Multisync Plus can even handle 768 lines non-interlaced, even though it's somewhat beyond the spec, but I'm going blind trying to read all the tiny type. I need a bigger screen. The obvious screen upgrade would be a 16" NEC 4D for about $950, but I see in Computer Shopper a bunch of other 16" and 17" screens such as: Goldstar super VGA 16" $623 Samsung super VGA 4 17" $823 Does anyone have experience with these or other 16" or 17" monitors? Are they comparable in quality to the NEC 4D? My current monitor has a fan which is unpleasantly loud. I'd prefer something quieter. Flyback noise may also be a concern; I can hear the whistle from a regular TV well enough that I've taken them back when they were too loud. I'm also looking for a faster controller, since scrolling a 700 scan line window is kind of slow. The obvious thing here would be an 8514/A card. I am aware of versions from Western Digital and ATI. Anyone have any experience with these? Since I already have a VGA and a free slot in my computer, it's not a big deal whether an 8514 has its own VGA or not. Other suggestions of controllers would be appreciated though since I'm running X11 rather than MS Windows, I need something for which I can get an X server. (I'm running under ISC 2.2 using Interactive's X11.3 server, but could be persuaded to use something else such as Roell's X11.4 if there were a good reason to switch.) TIA, -- John R.
