I apologize for the follow-up on my own answer to a novice question,
but I got mail complaining that my "solution to the net.catch-22"
omitted the net address of the sumex archives that I referred to.

FTP to sumex-aim.stanford.edu [36.44.0.6], and then:

To begin at the beginning, get /info-mac/util/binhex4.bin
by anonymous ftp in BINARY mode.

Then, set the filetype to ASCII and 
get /info-mac/util/unstuffit-deluxe-20.hqx.

Use any terminal emulator that recognizes MacBinary files (most do)
to download BinHex 4.0 to your Mac.  Download unstuffit-deluxe-20.hqx
and unBinHex it with the "DownLoad --> Application" command.

That accomplished, the rest of the net archives are easy.
