welp...to clear things up...

i was using mnp5 error-checking, v.32, HARDWARE handshaking...

i called the manufacturer (of the modems) and they're going to
send out new ROMs (again--it seems that that's their sure-fire
fixit)...

additionally, i probably didn't do ALL the testing i should have...
i'm going to try zterm or microphone ii...
