Cathy,

        Not sure about your problem...
But you don't have to unplug the si.

Apple has put the programmer and reset switches into keyboard interupts.
The next time it happens..

CMD-SHIFT-Power Key (maybe option and control too, can't remember)

This will do a reset.  Quite a bit less dramatic then unplugging it.
