Message-ID: <1991May10.182453.15964@athena.cs.uga.edu> Date: 10 May 91 18:24:53 GMT Organization: University of Georgia, Athens Lines: 27 This is a general info needed post. We have a situation where we are trying to distribute some of the work load around our sites, and take some of the heat off of our AS/400. To do this, we would like to put small networks out at each of the sites, and then download data as needed for people to use, with whatever db package they want. My question is: a) What level of Novell Software do we need to hook up both Macs and PCs, and how high-end can we go? b) What level of PC do we need (prob. 80 megs hd space min, mirroring not necessary) c) What options are there available for hooking up file transfer and session providing capabilities from the 400 to those clients? Can we get a card and (I believe this is the term) an NLM to let us download files and get a session at the same time as it provides fileserver capabilities to everybody else? I know I can get Appleshare with an Emerald Emulation card that will do the above, but without the pc hookup of course. But I would prefer a multi plat form capability, to be sure, even though the Mac is naturally superior to a pc :). That's it. Not much I guess- with Comdex coming up, some vendors are going to get a LOT of questions about this networking biz from me, though. Thanks in advance. Mail replies here, or post, and I will summarize. -- David W.
