From the AT&T documentation that comes with HP's internal ditroff (see page 60 of the Nroff/Troff User Manual, Section 11. Vertical Spacing Requests): .ls N Line spacing set to +/- N. Output N-1 blank lines (Vs) after each output text line. If the text or previous appended blank line reached a trap position, appended blank lines are omitted. Relevant parameters are part of the current environment.
