 Allah is not the same thing as God in Arabic may be you refer to Elah

 or RAB but Allah has a specific meaning and it is the name that mentioned

 in Quran . For example an arab christian does not say that Jesus is Allah.

 That is only for clarification although I don`t see a problem in using

 the word God whe I talk to a nonarab.
