I was using Ozan Yigit's sdbm package and gcc. It turns out that gcc does not like ndbm much, (has to do with passing structures differently than pcc). The fix was to simply re-compile hash.c (calls ndbm) with cc. All of the tests now pass. Thanks to all who gave me help. PS.
