Silvernail) Newsgroups: comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware Subject: (possibly simple) Hard Disk question... Message-ID: Date: 15 May 91 05:07:17 GMT Organization: Villa CyberSpace, Minneapolis, MN Lines: 28 My hardware: ST-251-1 40 Meg Hard Drive WD-GEN XT controller Formatted with controller BIOS (low-level), partitioned with DOS 3.3 FDISK, and formatted (high-level) with PCFORMAT. The problem: I have a primary 20-Meg partition, and 2 virtual drives on the extended second partition. Drives C: and D: both have 2,048-byte clusters. Now, I discover that drive E: (my 4-meg news partition) has _4,096-byte clusters_! No wonder I keep filling up my spool! Slack factor on E: is 56%. So, how do I fix this? I don't mind re-formatting, but I can't find anything in FDISK to specify cluster size. I can't imagine needing 4K clusters for a 4-meg partition. Can I get DOS to do 2K clusters on drive E:?
