Lines: 22 Originator: mfi@serc.cis.ufl.edu From the 5/14/91 issue of MacWeek: (paraphrase) Ricoh Launches new Compression technology Ricoh (Menlo Park CA.) has enhanced the DCT algorithm making it 30 times faster than JPEG implementations. The software running on a MacIIfx (40mhz 030) compressed a 768kbyte 24 bit image 25-1 in 3.5 seconds. The program manager said that an 040 would cut the compression to less than a second which is near the time currently offered by chip-based implemetations. Ricoh is at work on a chip-based implementation that will offer realtime performance. Ricoh plans to license both software and chip to developers starting this summer.
