Here's your problem: you aren't using any flow control and the machine
is sending data to the modem faster than it can pump it out onto the phone
line. Enable CTS on the modem and put CTSFLOW in your gettydefs entry and
see if that works. Your modem's buffer is getting overrun with new data 
before its been emptied out onto the phone line.
