Hi!

I am working on a DSP56001 based data acquisition and processing
system as a peripheral device on the AT Bus.  I need to write a 
high speed image encoding algorithm.  Algorithms which create
distortions are OK as long as the distortion range is determinable.
Also I would like to preserve the ability of performing random,
localized operations on the coded image (for example zonal processing
line-by-line processing etc.).  I would really appreciate any
inputs on  this issue (If there are sufficient number of responses
I'll post a summary). 

PS I would also appreciate any input about how to acquire literature
related to JPEG, MPEG specifications (standards ?)
