Interfacing to the ftp *protocol* doesn't mean you have to use the ftp *command* ! You can perform background ftp's from inside of emacs (M-x ftp-find-file). You can also use the bftp command (batched FTP). There are probably others ... Everybody says mail is a great way to transfer files.
