Have you tried creating a named pipe in a well known
location and sending the data from the SUN to the Apollo
through the pipe?

   Use mknod to create a named pipe,
   Run rbak on the Apollo with '-from named_pipe'
   Start the dd on the SUN with output to named_pipe

I haven't tried this but it might be worth a shot...
