When I had trouble with my Rodime drive I used Silverlining on a Mac to
reformat it. I think I left the partitioning to the Apple II GS utilities that
came with the card. The CMS card I had previously hard partitioned the drive,
so this was automatic, although I lost accessto the top two partitions (about
a third of the drive).

Try reformatting on the Mac without partitions or anything else and see what
happens with the GS. Make sure the drivers are already installed in your
system folder. 

How old is the drive?
