When we used (please don't laugh) Altos computers as our main machines, the Altos's did not support disk partitions or symbolic links. Adding a disk to the system meant you had to add the entire disk under one directory. This was not very convenient from an organizational standpoint. Under HP-UX, symbolic links help to resolve this, but I still prefer partitions. I only wish HP's partition scheme was more flexible. We have several SCO Xenix and Unix machines, which allows complete control over the partition sizes.
