I plan to pick up a used PC here one of these days,  can anyone recommend software
for testing the thing out?  This is my first PC so I don't have any working software
yet.  Should I pick up some shareware or other stuff just to check things out with?

I have access to a PC at work so I can familiarize myself with whatever I'll be using for
test purposes.
