Well- in the case of my palmtop (a Portfolio) the Damark $39 1200 baud
line-powered modem works fine.  It seems to support all the AT commands that 
I use without any trouble.  It is small, light and cheap- I reccomend it as
an easy way to turn a palmtop into a small terminal.
