When I ran the compatibility stack on hard disk, it came up that version
2.03 of the SCSI Probe cdev was compatible.  This appears to be wrong as
trying to access it would often give a bus error.  This problem was cleared 
by updating to version 3.0.  It is available in comp.binaries.mac.
