I believe you will have to rebuild the desktop after making a change like this. The same applies to installing a new version of a program (eg Retrospect 1.3) that adds new FREFs to permit dropping things on the app. I've updated my Understudy system extension to allow you to add to the list of type that can be dropped onto an application.
