As I was afraid, this seems to be covered by some FAQ-posting that I
have missed so far.

Nevertheless, I also got a direct pointer from Joachim Schrod
(xitijsch@ddathd21.bitnet) saying that the official ftp-hosts for
LaTeX are labrea.stanford.edu and rusmv1.rus.uni-stuttgart.de, the
former maintained by TUG, the latter by DANTE.
