With more recent versions of the nameserver there is a keyword or directive that you can put in the /etc/named.boot file : directory /your/path/here which will be where named will look for its database files. But, of course, the version of the code on the 6000 currently doesn't have this support, and, no, I don't think it has a default. Oh well, bit by the back-level code again :-}!
