The product of the nuclear PET494 gene is required for a posttranscriptional step in the accumulation of subunit III of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase (coxIII). Certain rearrangements of the mitochondrial gene oxi2 (such as acquiring the 5' sequences of other mitochondrial genes, giving rise to oxi2 transcripts carrying the 5' untranslated leaders of those mRNAs) suppress a PET494 deletion. Thus, it appears that PET494 specifically promotes translation, probably by interacting with the 5' untranslated leader of the oxi2 mRNA (see Mol. Cell. Biol. 6, 3649-3703 (1986)).
