I recently bought a 2400 baud modem with : -- MNP5 (an error correction protocol) -- V.42 (another error corretion protocol) -- V.42bis (a data compression protocol) If I call up another modem, and the other modem supports MNP5 or V.42 or V.42bis, the two modems will use those protocols (or a combination of them). This allows my calls to be more error-free (so that line noise or garbage characters are very rare) and faster due to data compression. This modem cost me $165 at Comp USA (formerly SoftWareHouse), in Lincolnwood, IL, (708)677-3644. They have stores in Texas, Georgia, California, Colorado, Michigan, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. While their prices are fairly low, this price on this modem was no special super bargain. Another place near here that has similar prices is Elek-Tek at (708)677-7660 or (800)395-1000. Or, you could buy a 1200 baud US Robotics modem (about 5 years old) from me for $60. No MNP5, V.42, or V.42bis, but it has worked very well with my Amiga.
