(I am also interested for curiosity sake.) I was wondering if there was any way to READ/WRITE QIC-24/QIC-11 UNIX TAR tapes on a PC. The hardware that I have is a SC 499R tape controller and an archive (scorpion ?) tape drive. Both the controller and drive documentation say that they support QIC-02 commands over the QIC-36 drive interface. The software which I purchased, Sytos, says in its brochure that it supports tar, but I really does not. At least I have not figured out how to use it. The way it is now, I can backup/restore files on the PC using the Sytos format. Which is fine for backups, but data compatibility with UNIX workstations would be nice (very nice). There are companies that advertise a drive, controller, and TAR software in several magazines, but they all want about $650 for their solution. I was interested in a solution that used my existing hardware. I have a public domain tar (with source) program but, I have no way to interface it the drive/controller. Any ideas hints, leads, ideas, or solutions would be great. Both public domain and commercial solutions are welcome. Please mail your replies and 'METOOs'. If there is enough interest, I will post a summary.
