Summary: Suggestions for a workaround sought. Keywords: Retrospect Quickmail FileShare Message-ID: <1991May23.045407.24758@CAM.ORG> Date: 23 May 91 04:54:07 GMT Organization: Altitude.CAM.ORG, St-Lambert QC CANADA Lines: 63 I was told today by DANTZ (makers of Retrospect, the best reason NEVER to touch FastBack II again :-) ) that the reason I've been having system hangs while backing up my machine under system 7 is that Retrospect and QuickMail server REALLY don't get along well. I know that QuickMail Server does lots of bizzare stuff to make sure that it gets enough CPU time and doesn't miss an interrupt (result : SE Ethernet cards don't work with it, can't format floppies on Server, etc....). I'm running the following software on 5meg IIcx 5/80 to serve a small workgroup of 5 people: Dedicated Mac IIcx (not on anyone's desk....) runs: System 7.0 golden master Apple Internet Router 2.0 (will get dumped as soon as Liasion 3.0.2 upgrade is delivered!) Emac Speedlink II v2.5 .ENET driver EtherTalk 2.0 (yeah, I know I should be running 2.2, I'll do that tomorrow) QuickMail Server v2.2.3 Retrospect SCSI init Retrospect Sheduler init Under MultiFinder.... Retrospect 1.2 QuickMail Administrator (for our gateways) Database Server (Faircom cTree server 4.3) FileShare (of the whole disk) This combination provides | EMail/Gatewaying/Routing/FileSharing/Backup/ Distributed Database | in a single system (I had to run that by the Dantz tech support guy 3 or 4 times, I guess he thought I was nuts !!!). The backup is done on an Emac Impact tape 150 (150meg TEAC cassette mechanism). Since backups require about 20-30 minutes, I would like to have these done at night ON THE SERVER. I could backup with the Teac on a workstation Via Ethernet but I would rather have the whole thing centralized. So basically, is there a way to "temporarily" kill the QuickMail server during the night, perform the backup and then reinstall the QuickMail server after the backup has been done? I have thought of making some kind of huge QuickKeys macro to do this, but I would rather avoid this type of kludge. Will Quickmail v2.5 solve the problem? Should I (*GASP*) use FastBack II instead of Retrospect to try to solve the problem (note: I hate FB II and will only use it if I'm really desperate) ? Or should I chicken out and do the backups via an Ethernet LC workstation (AppleShare Client with the whole server HD mounted) ??? I remember having done backups with QuickMail server ACTIVE under System 7.0b4. In fact, everything worked fine under b4 !!!
