Last month, I saw some posts about something called the Apple
Trade-In Event, where Apple would offer you a certificate usable
on the purchase of a new Mac in return for your old Mac, given
you still had the original packaging, system disks, etc.

Can anyone provide me with any specifics on when/how it occured?
