For people who like living on the edge, here is a cheap thrill :-) :

On Suns, you can burn in a message and an icon into EPROM, so that  
you company name and logo is displayed every time you turn your Sun  
on. You can't really do that on the NeXT, the closest thing being  
probably a customized login window. But wait ! There is hope !

Using you favorite binary editor (like uzap or fm, if you don't have  
one, I can mail it to you), edit /sdmach (gasp!). You can replace the  
stupid line that indicates the source directory with anything you  
want (up to 80 characters, I think).

This message is of course displayed only if your NeXT is set up to  
boot up with the monitor window. So when I boot up, I get :

NeXT ROM Monitor 1.0 v41
NeXT Mach 2.0: Wed Nov 21 12:46:53 PST 1990
This computer belongs to the University of St. Thomas, Dept. of  
Computer Science
FPU version 0x0
physical memory = 12.00 megabytes.
available memory = 11.00 megabytes.
etc...

Just another proof that some people have way too much free time on  
their hands (yeah, right).
