If you suddenly find that your previously functioning

cat "$file" | /usr/.ucbucb/rsh ......

has ceased to function after an upgrade to OSX5.1, try

/usr/.ucbucb/rsh ...... < $file

Note that the "cat" works for small files but not for large.
There is an open SFR from Oz on this one.
