System: rs6000, aix 3.1 (3002)

I have been trying to get gnutar to work using the STIOCTLOPs 
mentioned in the rmt description.  I have successfully 
compiled gnutar with and without the st stuff.  I can tar a
single set over the network, but I can't add anything to that
set. It doesn't seem to matter if I use the version with the
STIOCTLOPS or not. The question is does anyone know if the 8mm 
drive supports the STIOCTLOPs? or am I out of luck.
