I have a monochrome X terminal, and to get any kind of gray under 2.6, I must create an on-off-on-off Pattern, put it in a Painter, and fill with that Painter. I think I can do the same thing in 3.0 with a stencil call to a Renderer, but is there a better way? The man page for Pattern says that Colors using an alpha value make Patterns obsolete, but the alpha value doesn't have any effect on my X terminal. As a more general question, is there a way to make my program look good on both a monochrome display and a color display, without code for each? anyone? anyone? thanks, Dave Wilson dlwilson@encore.com
