It's quite easy. You get a copy of the source, edit (I forget which file), and then recompile. Seriously, that's the only way (except maybe patching the executable or modifying your palette). And while you're at it you can modify the defaults for shiftwidth, showmode, ignorecase, etc. One thing that I've found, colors that look fine on one brand of monitor may look terrible on another.
